Advantages of basalt fiber geogrid

Basalt fiber geogrid is a high-performance geosynthetic material that uses basalt fibers (natural volcanic rocks melted and drawn by high temperature) as raw material, made into a mesh structure through warp knitting process, and is surface coated (such as modified asphalt, polymer). It combines the high strength, high modulus, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and other characteristics of basalt fibers, as well as the reinforcement and enhancement functions of geogrids, and has significant advantages in civil engineering. The following are its core advantages and application scenarios:
1. Excellent physical and mechanical properties
1. High strength and high modulus
Tensile strength: The tensile strength of a single fiber can reach 2000-3000MPa (about 3-4 times that of steel bars), and the overall tensile strength of the grille is usually 80-300kN/m (far exceeding the 10-100kN/m of plastic geogrids).
Elastic modulus: up to 90-100GPa (close to 200GPa of steel bars, 2-3 times that of glass fiber), with little deformation when subjected to stress, which can effectively inhibit cracking of soil or asphalt pavement.
Application scenarios:
Deep reinforcement of expressway and railway subgrades improves bearing capacity and reduces settlement.
The reinforcement of heavy-loaded grounds such as airport runways and container yards will resist fatigue cracking caused by long-term vehicle loads.
2. Low elongation
Elongation of fracture: ≤3% (plastic grille is usually 10%-15%), which is a rigid reinforced material, which can quickly transfer loads and avoid structural instability caused by excessive deformation of the material itself.
Advantages: Suitable for deformation-sensitive projects (such as soft soil foundation treatment), reducing post-work settlement and differential settlement.
2. Outstanding chemical stability and durability
1. Excellent corrosion resistance
Acid-base erosion resistance: Basalt fibers have stable chemical properties, and their performance retention rate is >95% in environments of pH=2 (strong acid) to pH=12 (strong alkali), which is far superior to glass fibers (poor alkali resistance) and plastic grilles (poor oil resistance).
Resistance to salt spray and microbial erosion: In coastal areas, salted soil or landfills, the service life can reach more than 50 years (plastic grilles are usually 15-20 years).
Application scenarios:
Reinforcement of roads in chemical parks and roads around sewage treatment plants.
The geogrid layer of tailings dam and landfill anti-seepage layer prevents material deterioration caused by the penetration of harmful substances.
2. Resistant to UV and aging
The surface coating (such as modified asphalt) can effectively block UV rays and avoid performance attenuation caused by direct fiber exposure. It is suitable for long-term open-pit environments (such as open-pit mine roads and desert highways).
3. High temperature resistance and fatigue resistance are significant
1. High temperature resistance
Melting point: The melting point of basalt fibers reaches 1500℃, the short-term temperature resistance can reach 600℃, and the long-term temperature resistance (under continuous load) can reach 200-300℃.
Application scenarios:
Industrial high-temperature regional roads (such as steel plants and coking plant transportation roads) resist the damage to the road surface by leakage of high-temperature materials.
During asphalt pavement construction (paving temperature 160-180℃), the grille will not soften due to high temperature and will be more firmly combined with asphalt.
2. Strong anti-fatigue cracking ability
Under repeated loads (such as frequent vehicle rolling), the grille can effectively disperse stress concentration, reducing the generation of road surface reflective cracks (reflective crack reduction rate can reach 70%-80%).
Case: After a highway cover project uses basalt fiber grille, the incidence of reflective cracks within 5 years is 75% lower than that in unreinforced sections.
4. Convenient construction and environmental protection advantages
1. Strong construction adaptability
Light weight: The unit area is about 300-800g/m² (lower than 800-1500g/m² of steel and plastic grating), with high handling and laying efficiency and can be laid manually or mechanically.
Flexible curlable: suitable for laying complex terrain (such as slopes and curves), it can be deformed without breaking as the soil is deformed.
Easy to connect: Use special connection parts (such as U-shaped nails, tie straps) or overlap (lap width ≥20cm), no special tools are required.
2. Green and environmental protection
Raw materials: Basalt fibers are taken from volcanic rocks and are natural mineral materials. They are free of chemical pollution and can be recycled and reused (can be used as concrete aggregate after crushing).
Low carbon energy saving: Production energy consumption is 60%-70% lower than steel grille, and meets the requirements of green building materials and sustainable development.
